The five human rights experts that make up the group will be in Chinese territory – including the Tibet region – from September 19 to 30 at the invitation of the Beijing government.
The delegation's tour, chaired by Algerian lawyer Leila Zerrougui, will begin in the capital of China and continue to Chengdu, in the province of Sichuan, to end in Lhasa, capital of Tibet.
During the visit, UN specialists will meet with officials from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Public Security, as well as with judges and prosecutors.
Likewise, they will interview lawyers, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), detainees, former detainees and their families.
At the conclusion of its mission, the group will prepare a report with its findings that it will present to the UN Commission on Human Rights during its annual meeting for 2005.
