Every year since 2011, the ICRC has awarded the Humanitarian Golden Visa to a photojournalist as part of the annual photojournalism festival "Visa pour l'image ", which takes place in Perpignan, France.
From 2011 to 2015, the award invited photojournalists to address the issue of endangered health care and respect for medical services during armed conflict and violence.
From 2015 to 2017, the contest focused on women at war: sexual violence, detained women, women searching for missing relatives, the situation of combatants or also women who become single heads of families.
Since 2018, the theme of this photography competition has been urban warfare and its consequences for people forced to hide or flee. The ICRC's Humanitarian Visa d'Or award is an €8,000 prize for professional photojournalists.

In memoriam: this edition of the ICRC Humanitarian Golden Visa is dedicated to Benoît Schaeffer , photojournalist and jury member, who passed away last December.
