A new wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine has left more than a dozen dead and over 50 wounded , in addition to damaging homes and essential infrastructure. The UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, condemned the escalation and warned that August began with two large-scale nighttime attacks by the Russian Federation's armed forces, following the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022.
The attacks affected densely populated areas of the region and the city of Kyiv, where search and rescue operations continue while humanitarian workers provide assistance to those affected. The violence has also left more families devastated, displaced, or trying to rebuild their lives.
Attacks in different parts of the country
The escalation has not been limited to Kyiv. Air and drone strikes have also hit Kramatorsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia , where dozens of residents, including children, have been killed or wounded. The attacks also damaged homes, schools, public transport vehicles, water supply systems, and humanitarian warehouses, disrupting services and infrastructure on which the civilian population depends.
Schmale recalled that international humanitarian law requires military actors to take all necessary precautions to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure . “Civilians throughout Ukraine should be able to live, work, and raise their children without fear of further attacks,” he stated.
Humanitarian supplies are not spared from attacks either.
Damage has also extended to facilities used for storing aid. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ) reiterated that humanitarian goods and supplies are not a target , after a drone attack damaged a Save the Children warehouse in Ukraine.
No one was injured in the incident, but essential supplies intended for children were damaged. The organization was assessing the losses following the attack. “Children continue to pay the price of this war,” said Sonia Khush, Save the Children's Country Director in Ukraine.
The continued attacks are leaving more families devastated, displaced, or trying to rebuild their lives , while emergency teams and humanitarian organizations continue to provide assistance to the affected population.
