Press release – Opening: 16-19 September plenary session

Consequences of extreme weather in central and eastern Europe

The extreme weather and flooding in Poland, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia and Germany has been devastating, as is the brutal impact of major fires in Portugal, said President Metsola. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones, their homes, with those missing, and with first responders and all those still battling, she added. The EU must play its part and continue to do whatever is necessary to help, she said.

Two-year anniversary of murder of Jina Mahsa Amini

Two years after Jina Mahsa Amini was brutally murdered in Iran, Parliament proudly stands with the brave, defiant women and men who continue to fight for equality, dignity and freedom, said President Metsola, adding that Parliament will continue to stand with those who risk their lives even from prison to keep the movement alive. Parliament honours her legacy and all those who paid the price for liberty, she concluded.

Minute of silence to remember Predrag Fred Matić

MEPs held a minute of silence in honour of MEP Predrag Fred Matić, who passed away on 23 August. A champion of social justice, human rights and equality, he influenced policies and changed lives, said the President. As a war hero and a former minister, he had a strong sense of duty, and an unwavering commitment to build a better Europe, she added.
